The five songs I listened to most last week, for those who are interested in broadening their musical sphere. GO!
Lost in Love – SNSD
The thing that really attracted me to this song is that it makes you feel like you’re underwater. But then, as I listen more and more to it, I just find it incredibly catchy. Plus, they’re singing slowly enough for me to understand a lot of what they’re saying in Korean. AND, they’ve got the harmony going for them. I love harmonies. I will never not love harmonies.
Hello, friends! It’s been a while since I last posted, so I decided to do a regular updates-on-my-life type post for all my overseas friends. (Which means it will be informal, probably not sense-making, and also probably uninteresting to those who don’t personally know me. LET’S GO)
I’ve written before about how one of my reasons for loving to learn languages is that it expresses something, be it a thought, action, feeling, or atmosphere in a better way than my native tongue. One of the reasons this is so is because different words naturally have different rhythms to them that make them beautiful.
I intuitively knew this was a major reason for my love of songs in Japanese and Korean, as well as German podcasts (something about the way they talk, man) but I didn’t fully grasp it until I began listening to two Korean rappers: Gary and T.O.P.
You see, without the baggage of my native language to drag me away from the rhythm and beauty of the words, I completely fell in love with just the sound of how these two men were using words. Usually I’m too caught up in being barraged by what-even-in-the-heck with English rap – which is not to say that it’s bad, but that the combination of the rhythm and harsh words mixed with the vivid imagery of the best rappers tends to completely overwhelm me.
Whether I like a song or not depends heavily on whether that song has a mood. By mood, I mean a kind of strong atmospheric sense of… something. For example, one of my favorite songs ever is Keep Tryin’ by Utada Hikaru, because I feel that song pretty much captures the feeling of trying to do your best and work hard at a time when you’re stuck in the doldrums, feeling like you’re getting nowhere.
With that in mind, I’d like to share with you a few of my favorite K-Pop songs and what mood I believe they set.
Blue – Big Bang
Happy White Day, everyone! For those who don’t know, White Day is a holiday in Japan, South Korea, China, and Taiwan that follows exactly one month after Valentine’s Day. In these countries, Valentine’s Day is the day girls give chocolates to the important people in their lives, and White Day is the day to reciprocate if you received anything. In honor of White Day, I undertook a challenge on Habit RPG, part of which asked me to write and send a letter to a dear, lovely stranger. So I created a stranger who is a mishmash of people who I know and pretended I was in love with them. (Huehuehue, my friends – can you find yourselves?) And so it begins.
Unfortunately, the visual novel I was creating for NaNoRenO will not be released. Due to a combination of artistic differences and artists being forced to leave the project, the game no longer has artists to work on it. This means that, yup, I’m officially backing out of NaNoRenO.
I am just here to announce that I will be participating in NaNoRenO 2014. What is NaNoRenO? Well, it’s like NaNoWriMo… except for visual novels. Attempt to create one visual novel, one video game, with all the art, programming, scriptwriting, and music that it entails… in one month. It starts on March 1st, and then the clock will be ticking! ^-^
The plot for this VN centers around a female assassin hired to kill an heir to an extremely powerful company. It will be a VN about mystery, romance, and political intrigue. The concept is that it will be a rather difficult game, with two good endings, several bad endings, and several endings in between that have varying degrees of success both in terms of romance and plot.
That is all I will say while we’re still in the planning and outlining stages. It will be officially announced on March 1st, with a title and a more developed synopsis. It will also be consistently updated as our goals are met and progress is made.
Until then, please wait patiently. ^-^ I will see you all again on March 1st!
For those who are interested – would you rather have updates here, on my personal blog, or have another blog dedicated to VNs? What would you like to see in this VN?
Additionally, we are still looking for an artist willing to create background art and able to work well with the sprite artist on the team. Comment if interested.
